Based in Portland, Oregon under the direction of Donna Oefinger, Axé Didé Music and Dance Company performs dynamic interpretations of sacred and secular dances from Cuba and Brazil. These centuries-old, African-rooted traditions captivate audiences with movements as unique as the history of the people who bore them across oceans of tragedy.  Axé Didé's adaptation of these movements gives a fresh and uplifting view of expression through history.

Taken literally, "Axé Didé" means Rising Vital Energy. Axé Didé, with its 30+ performers, calls forth this energy through a variety of dances ranging from the entrancing gods of fire, metal and water to the celebratory and sexy movements of Samba. Dancers are accompanied by live drumming and singing, further intensifying the experience of life force or Axé.

"Full Circle" embodies Donna's vision of bringing dynamic expression from both the past and the present together, giving dances steeped in tradition a fresh twist. “Full Circle” also explores the power of dancing in a circle, an ancient tradition common to many cultures for marking special occasions, strengthening community and invoking spirit.  Special guest performers Freila Merencio, from Havana, Cuba, and "The Liquid Kings of Krump" reveal the ever-evolving dances of the African Diaspora.

Don't miss this unique and powerful show that will call to your spirit and bring you to your feet!

Axé Didé: The Warrior and the Princess
Axé Didé, directed by Donna Oefinger of Center Space Studio, performs dynamic dance and music interpretations of Cuban and Brazilian sacred and secular culture. The complex and elemental nature of these traditions have been passed down orally for hundreds of years, keeping a forbidden culture alive. Axé Didé captivates audiences with movements and music as unique as their history.
Taken literally, Axé Didé means Rising Vital Energy. Axé Didé gives the art an uplifting and inspiring adaptation to the stage presenting a variety of dances ranging from the intense gods of fire and water to the celebratory, sexy movements of Samba. The energy in their music & dance speaks through their name; Axé Didé, vital life force rising up!
Guest performers for "The Warrior and the Princess" will add a flare rarely seen in Portland. Cuban native, Freila Merencio, will bring her culture to the stage through her experience as a principal dancer for "Raices Profundas." The vivid evolution of the African Diaspora will be reflected through the intricate, revitalizing movements from the "Liquid Kings of Crump" and Hip Hop dancer Andre Baker. This is a show that reaches across not only oceans but across generations. Seldom do we see such a display on one night, on one stage, in one city.
